Abortion Information

Medical Abortion

Process:

The Abortion Pill, also known as a chemical abortion or medication abortion, typically involves the use of two pills to end a pregnancy, which may be taken up to 10 weeks gestation. The first pill blocks Progesterone, a hormone necessary for the survival of a pregnancy, while the second pill causes cramping which expels the contents of the uterus.

Side Effects:

  • Cramping
  • Bleeding
  • Nausea/Vomiting
  • Dizziness

Risks:

  • Incomplete abortion
  • Heavy and prolonged bleeding (the average woman bleeds for 9-16 days but some women bleed for over a month)
  • Infection
  • Fever
  • Digestive system discomfort

Surgical Abortion

Aspiration/Suction Procedure up to 12 weeks

Dilatation &  Evacuation after 12 weeks

Process:

Aspiration (Surgical Abortion) is a procedure in which local anesthesia is provided while a tube is inserted into the uterus through the cervix and connected to a suction device that removes all contents of the uterus.

Dilatation & Evacuation (Surgical Abortion) is a more complex procedure in which the fetus is 13 weeks gestational age or greater. Due to the larger size, different methods of anesthesia are typically used and, in addition to the suction, medical tools are often necessary to empty the uterus, with the fetus being removed in pieces or sometimes intact.

Side Effects:

  • Bleeding
  • Nausea/Vomiting
  • Pain

Risks:

  • Severe Bleeding
  • Clots
  • Infection
Is the abortion pill by mail safe?

While it may seem convenient to order the abortion pill online, there are risks in taking the abortion pill without first confirming a pregnancy through ultrasound. An ultrasound will determine the three things you need to know prior to making a decision or taking the abortion pill:

  1. Is the pregnancy in the uterus?
  2. How far along is the pregnancy?
  3. Is there a heartbeat?

Without knowing these three things, you might be putting yourself at risk of complications. Chat with one of our nurses now or book an appointment online to verify your pregnancy with an ultrasound.

Ordering the abortion pill by mail is prohibited in the state of Florida.

Risks of taking the abortion pill without having an ultrasound:
  • Ectopic Pregnancy
  • Incomplete Abortion
  • Infection
  • Hemorrhaging

Abortion is a major decision and should not be rushed into. Make sure you have educated yourself on each of the options and are aware of each procedure, risk, and long term effect.

Before You Decide

  • Has your pregnancy been confirmed?

  • Have you had your pregnancy confirmed by an ultrasound?

  • Have you been tested recently for STDs/STIs?

  • Have you received abortion education about the abortion pill and the types of surgical abortions?

  • Are you aware of possible complications associated with the abortion procedure?

  • Have you been informed of possible emotional side-effects after an abortion?

  • Have you evaluated each option?

  • Do you have someone to remain with you through the procedure?

  • Do you have someone you trust who will monitor your mental health after undergoing an abortion procedure?

Your next step is to confirm your pregnancy with a hospital-grade urine pregnancy test. Chat now with one of our nurses to schedule a free pregnancy test appointment.
